Tyron from The Footdown just linked me to a blog post over on Going, Going, Bike detailing a new scheme that Lancashire Police, specifically Preston Police, have been and are continuing to run. They’re basically stopping cyclists around the Preston area and asking to see proof of ownership of the bike they are riding at the time of being stopped.
Now, i’m all for cycle security and i’d love for the police to have a better hit-rate when it comes to reclaiming stolen bikes, but stopping cyclists on the street for proof of ownership is a bit too much in my opinion. It’s a good job that an acceptable document is a photo of the rider on that bike because there’s quite a few of those knocking around ;)
Give it a proper read here and think what you want, personally, i think it’s a step too far.
